What is Spy Rock?

Spy Rock is a mountain summit in Nelson County which offers one of the finest viewpoints in the central Blue Ridge. The rocky outcrop, at just under a 4,000 foot elevation, provides a 360 degree panoramic view of numerous mountains and the surrounding countryside and is believed to have been used by Confederate scouts to monitor movements of the Union troops, and before that by the Cherokee as a scouting outpost — hence the name Spy Rock.
